Description

The Bo-Kaap Cooking Tour takes you on a voyage into the life, food and culture of the Cape Malay's in Bo-Kaap whilst offering you a hands-on, practical lesson on how to cook like a real Cape Malay 'Auntie'! Learn how to fold Samoosa's and mix Masala for that perfect pot of Cape Malay Curry!

You will be hosted at Zainie's home, where you will not only learn secret cooking techniques, but also get an insight into daily life in the Bo-Kaap. The experience ends with a Cape Malay lunch where you can share your experiences with the group whilst indulging in a mouth-watering traditional meal.

A fully immersive social and cultural experience combining a walking tour, hand on cooking workshop and 2 course lunch. This 3 and a half hour experience will introduce you to the food, culture and traditions of the Cape Malay's of Bo-Kaap.

Bo-Kaap is situated strategically at the foot of signal hill in the heart of Cape Town, and is home to several historic and Islamic sites. Bo-Kaap with its cobbled roads and colourful houses has preserved a people and culture through community, the practice of religion and tradition.

Food plays a big role in Bo-Kaap culture as once a year you will find the streets littered with children carrying plates of food and cakes for neighbours to sample, as part of 'Ramadaan' (a month-long fast). Other activities include regular food bazaars and markets where residents can show off their specialties!

Cape Malay cuisine has had a major influence in South African food and some might consider it SA's National Cuisine! Cape Malay cuisine is spicy and aromatic, yet mild. Prominent ingredients are Fresh Coriander (Dhania/Cilantro), Garlic, Ginger, Curry Leaves and an array of spices. Its origins can be dated back to cooking pots of the 17th and 18th century exiled dissidents and slaves brought to the Cape from the Dutch East Indies. While there are recognisable Asian elements, Cape Malay cooking has undergone a considerable degree of adaptation to suit local conditions and ingredient availability.

We offer an educational and fun experience encompassing insights into the Cape Malay culture in Bo-Kaap from a culinary perspective. Designed by Zainie and hosted in her home, your guide will entertain you with stories of the food and culture of Bo-Kaap whilst returning to Zanie's kitchen to cook up a storm.

Our journey starts at a local grocer in Bo-Kaap then continues to the local spice merchants to teach you how to shop for spices. After a brief stroll through the cobbled streets and a little bit of history we return to Zainie's home.

In the cooking class, guests will discover the secrets of mixing Masala, making Dhaltjies (Chilli Bites), preparing and folding Samoosas, making and frying Rootis and learning the traditional way to cook a mouth-watering Cape Malay Curry which you will enjoy in a sit down lunch whilst being entertained you with local recipes and stories of food, culture and life.

Refreshments and tasters are served before Lunch, thereafter you will receive a recipe booklet together with bag of Zainie's special Masala Mix for your first curry meal.

January, 2019

The tour began with a walking tour lead by Zainie Misbachs son whom took us around his neighborhood and into many staple stores and a spice shop. We then had a lovely class with Zainie Misbachs, making samosas, curry chicken, and other Cape Malay dishes. We even made our own Roti! We had a wonderful time and would suggest the class to any cooking expert or novice!
